Geno Smith’s Workout Isn’t the First That Jeffrey Lurie Has Attended – Updated!

Are the Eagles seriously considering taking WVU’s Geno Smith with the fourth pick of the 2013 NFL Draft? Twitter and newswires blew up with theories once it was known that Eagles owner Jeffrey Lurie attended Geno Smith’s private workout for the Eagles’ brass. Surely, some assumed, if the owner is attending the workout then the team is serious about drafting this player. Others theorized that this is all part of a master ploy to get other teams interested in Smith and to trade up for him.

I wouldn’t dare wager on which side of that story is correct. What I can do is try to figure out if Jeffrey Lurie regularly attends potential draft-pick workouts. I have been able to find only one such instance. The workout for this man:

mamulaThat’s right, Mike Mamula! I don’t know if that’s the only workout Jeffrey Lurie has attended, but it’s one that I definitely found evidence of. If this is true and the Eagles do end up drafting Geno Smith, let’s all pray to the football gods that it turns out a little better than the Mike Mamula experience.

UPDATED: Jeffrey Lurie confirmed at a press conference that he attended McNabb workouts. That’s two confirmed workouts and those two players were drafted.
