Wish Came True

Today, the Phillies announced that Chris Wheeler and Gary “Sarge” Matthews will not be returning as part of the broadcast team in 2014.  While I never wish for anyone to be out of a job, I did openly and often wish that Wheels was moved to the radio.

Chris Wheeler in Phillies broadcast booth. For me, Wheeler’s act grew old.  He regurgitated the same info again and again–middle in, no doubles defense, etc.  It was as though he read off a scouting report passing the information off as his own. He name-dropped all the players he talked with and told stories like he was a member of the playing crew, but seemed more like a tag-along.  More than anything, I felt like he talked down to me. He constantly felt the need to explain basic little league information and strategies to me, the viewer, again and again.

I wish Wheeler well and hope he remains on the Phillies payroll.  I’m also glad that I won’t have to turn on a non-synced radio broadcast to watch a Phillies game.  For me, this is news as good as signing Shin-Soo Choo.

Sarge always reminded me of the funny, drunk uncle at holiday parties.  He brought levity and told crazy stories.  He also gave us the popular soundbyte “Jerk off the ball”

Have had the pleasure of seeing Sarge out and about several times at a local watering hole that we both frequent.  He’s always been nothing, but pleasant.  One night, he let the staff all pass around his World Series ring and take pictures with him.  Sarge is good for the ballclub and the community.  I hope he remains active in both.

Looking forward to a fresh new voice…would love for it to be Franzke and L.A.  If CSN was smart, that would be the move.  It would make a possible 62-100 season easier to watch.
