New Music Pick – 1/20/2014

It’s time for a weekly new music pick.  This past week had a few notable releases, including Bruce Springsteen and the Pixies.  The Bruce record is solid with some nice guitar work by Tom Morello (Rage Against the Machine).  However, I’m going Sharon Jones & the Dap Kings.

If you’re not familiar with Sharon Jones, the woman is simply bad-ass.  She worked as a backup singer and as a prison guard at Rikers Islands.  I think she hooked up with the Dap Kings in 2002 and has been releasing great music ever since.

Sharon and the Dap Kings are a funk and soul revival full of percussions, horns and great energy.  The music appeals to hipsters, baby boomers and everything in between.

The new release, Give the People What they Want, was set to be released in 2013, but Sharon Jones was diagnosed with cancer.  She recently completed her final chemotherapy treatment on December 31st. Because of that, she is bald in the video for the single Stranger to My Happiness.

This new album continues her reign as the Queen of Soul!

Check out the video for the single below and then legally purchase the full length in some fashion.
