Time for the Giants to Add a Phillie
The Giants recently lost their grip on first place in the NL West to their rival the Los Angeles Dodgers. They have a glaring need at second base, but the Giants probably don’t have enough in the minors to convince the Phillies to move Chase Utley. I don’t think they had a prospect ranked in the top 50 of Baseball America’s mid-season rankings. However, recent rumors have them interested in Jimmy Rollins with the belief that they’d move current shortstop Brandon Crawford to 2B.
Rollins may be open to a trade to San Francisco being that he’s reached his goal of setting the Phillies franchise record for hits and the fact that he was born in Oakland. If that’s the case AND the Giants are interested, Ruben Amaro, Jr should be able to fleece Giants GM Brian Sabean based on past history. And, Giants fans should be demanding a trade with the Phillies, based on past history.
On May 29, 2010 the San Francisco Giants signed former longtime Phillie Pat Burrell after a short stint with the Tampa Bay Rays. According to a bartender on a recent trip to San Francisco, Pat Burrell was instrumental in getting the Giants over the hump and into the World Series. He said that Burrell was a fan-favorite, productive and a much-needed personality in the clubhouse that brought the team together. Burrell and the Giants won the World Series in 2010.
On July 31, 2012 the Giants traded top-catching prospect Tommy Joseph, Seth Rosin and Nate Shierholtz to the Phillies for Hunter Pence. The trade didn’t work out so well for the Phillies at Tommy Joseph has been plagued with concussions since his arrival in the Phillies system. The Giants made out a little better. Pence and the Giants went on to win the World Series in 2012.
The Giants have added former Phillies to their roster two out of the past four years. In both of those years, the Giants won the World Series. Those two years were the even years (2010, 2012). Seems to me that the Giants are due for a former Phillie on their roster, seeing that it’s 2014.
Surely, Brian Sabean and Giants fans must be familiar with the trend. If they aren’t and I was Ruben, I’d sure as hell make them aware of the trend. Another World Series is in their reach if they simply follow the path that the Baseball Gods have demonstrated to be the right path….get a former Phillie on that roster. Come on Sabean, make us an offer!
Let’s start with catcher Andrew Susac to make up for the Tommy Joseph misfortune. You know the Giants want another one of these:
