Philly Weekend Preview: 1/9/15

The holidays have come and gone. The New Years hangover should have subsided by now. It’s cold as hell outside, but that’s no reason not to do something fun in the city this weekend. Here are our picks.

FRIDAY:

DO NOT SEE TAKEN 3. That’s simply a Public Service Announcement.

PSA #2: It’s easy to recycle your Christmas trees. Here’s a link to local tree recycling spots this weekend.

The Big Philly Beerfest. Does this really need a description? If you insist. 90+ Brewers. 250+ craft beers. Convention Center. Money raised goes to help shelter animals. This runs Friday and Saturday night from 6:15 to about 10:45.

The Art of Noise Hip Hop Project is happening at Kung Fu Necktie. KFN is a great place to see a show. I remember seeing Foster the People and Grouplove there years ago.  This night is a record release party for Malik B. of the Roots crew.  Other performers will include Philly’s Carl Madison and Grand Agent, Renaissance woman L.Y.R.I.S.P.E.C.T. and Delaware rapper KAE Hock. They’ll be selling art pieces by Ebony R & Emerge and Rob Woods. Admission is only $5-$7 too!

Get to The Winter Lodge at RiverRink on Penn’s Landing for cocktails, smores and fire pits. One of Philly’s All-Star bartenders, Jogi, is usually there. Tip her well!

SATURDAY:

Who doesn’t like the Hooters? That Philly band singing about zombies before they were all the craze? They were pioneers ahead of their time. Remember this?

The Hooter with the dark hair is Eric Bazilian. He also wrote Joan Osbourne’s hit One of Us. He’s playing the Tin Angel this Saturday with local philly legend Wesley Stace, who recorded under the name John Wesley Harding. This is some major local talent for $20.

Johnny Brenda’s hosts Weyes Blood. Weyes Blood features Natalie Merling who used to play with Jackie-O Motherfucker. Be warned, this stuff is cool, but not unless you’re the musically adventurous. Her music has been categorized as grime-ghost fringe-music. Check out a sample:

This month features snowflakes. You bring the kids and they make beaded creations in a workshop environment that is free with admissions.

TEASER TIME:

The NFL playoffs are upon us. Just a couple of weeks left to make some cash. Tease the Panthers to +17 with the Patriots to -1.

Have a great weekend and be nice to one another.
