Weekend Preview: 1/17-1/19

Another week gone. With the cold weather, there just aren’t a lot of outdoor events, but we did our best to filter out what we think are the best of the best for this weekend:

Get to The Winter Lodge at RiverRink on Penn’s Landing for cocktails, smores and fire pits. This is every weekend….for a while.

Colin Quinn is at Helium Comedy Club Friday and Saturday nights. Remember Quinn from MTV”s Remote Control? He was also briefly on SNL and does appearances at occasional roasts. Quinn is also on the Opie & Anthony radio show. He’s a funny dude.

James Tillman is at Johnny Brenda’s Friday night. If you’re in the mood for seriously chill live music you should think about venturing to Fishtown for this show. Tillman’s got a great voice with mellow jazz, funk and soul music backing him up. This should be a perfect show to unwind with after a long week. He’s opening up for Wild Child, which are definitely worth sticking around for. Tillman is set to go on at 8:30.

Saturday, you can still recycle your Christmas Trees at these 23 Philadelphia locations.

Animal Mythology Weekend is going on Sat-Monday at The Academy of Natural Sciences of Drexel University.  Learn amazing facts about the animals that inspire mythical beasts from around the world. This should be good family fun with fossils, live animal shows. Here’s the skinny.

If your kids still haven’t gotten enough of Frozen, the Philadelphia Flower Show Celebrates Frozen at the Riverrink Winterfest has got you covered Saturday. The event runs noon to 3 p.m. and will feature a showing of the film, giveaways, real life princesses and Prince Charming. It’s basically free and you can then go skating if ya want.

Brat Productions is a local theater group who always does quality work. This weekend they have Always Coming Soon: The Future happening at the Painted Bride. A rock and roll cabaret about a troupe of misfit vagabonds who find a time machine with a little prog rock? What more can you ask for. Here’s a little about the production.

Monday is Edgar Allen Poe’s birthday, but you can celebrate it all weekend. This Saturday and Sunday is Edgar Allen Poe’s Birthday Celebration. There are specials tours, readings and activities for the kids each day. Poe would be 206 this year. Think about it, his shit was the coolest stuff we read in school. Celebrate his birthday and grab some cake if you don’t have anything else on the schedule. Did I mention it’s FREE?!

Cracker/Camper Van Beethoven make our list for Saturday Night at World Cafe Live, but the event is sold out. If you can score some secondary market tickets cheaply, it should be a good show. Who doesn’t like Cracker’s Teen Angst?

TEASER TIME: All right gambling degenerates, we have two more weekends of football wagering. The tease this week is a 10 point 3 teamer. Grab the Packers teased to +17.5, the over in the Packers/Seattle game teased to 36 and the Patriots at home teased to +2.5.

Be good to one another and enjoy the weekend!!!
