Weekend Preview: 1/23-1/25

What’s shaking in the city this weekend? A ton of good music among other things. Here’s our picks:

You know we are big fans of RiverRink’s Winterfest. This weekend Winterfest has their first ever Brewfest. Breweries such as Sly Fox, Cape May Brewing, Evil Genius, and Twin Lakes take over the taps. Beer movies will be shown. It runs Friday through Sunday. Friday has a Quizzo and a live DJ. A couple of bands plays Saturday and some homebrew demos are happening Sunday. CHECK IT OUT!

The Antichrist Superstar himself, MARILYN MANSON, hits the Electric Factory Friday night. I haven’t seen Manson perform for a while because he seemed to get lazy about his music and performances. Reports are that his new effort is a focused, bluesy album and that he’s back old-school shape. If that’s true, he puts on one hell of a show.

Here’s a link to one of his new tracks:

TheUnity  performs at the Rotunda Friday in West Philly (4014 Walnut Street) at 7:30 as part of the The University of Pennsylvania’s 20th Annual Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. 2015 Commemorative Symposium.  TheUnity honors the human spirit with improvisational, meditative, soulful and jazzy music magic utilizing African rhythms, drums, percussion, wind, native instruments, and voices raised in song and story to enhance justice and shine the light of our own true nature. I’ve seen group a couple of times and it’s always feel good fun. I hear there might be food included at 7:00.

if you’re in the mood for dark German Downfall of Gaia is at Kung Fu Necktie tonight at 8:oo p.m.

More music….Reverend Horton Heat brings the Baddest of the Bad Tour to Underground Arts on Friday night. Rosie Flores is opening up. She’s been called the heir to Wanda Jackson. Wanda Jackson is badass, btw.

Ray Diddinger Book Signing at Shibe Sports.  Ray is a Philadelphia treasure. As a journalist, he was inducted in the Football Hall of Fame. He is the god of football journalism in this area. Ray just released an updated Philadelphia Eagles Encyclopedia and is doing a talk/signing Saturday at Shibe Sports in center city. This is a chance to hang out, listen to great stories about the Eagles and ask Ray questions about teams of the past and the Eagles’ future. He’s the best. The event is free and starts at 5:30. Shibe has some decent vintage gear, too. Then, you can stumble down to Dirty Frank’s for a beer.

The Wilma Theater is hosting a free screening of the documentary Under Fire: Journalists in Combat Saturday at 4:30. This is a Peabody Award winning film that explores the psychological cost of covering a war. Here’s the trailer:

Yo…The Smithereens are at World Cafe Live Saturday night. The show is sold out, but you can always buy tickets off the fine entrepreneurs outside the venue. I just wanted to post this video, because it’s a good song.

If you need your football fix on Sunday you can put a team together, drink beers All-Pro football quizzo at Founding Fathers Sports Bar & Grill at 5:30. $4.50 craft beers and $5 nachos. There may be a USFL question so be prepared.

Don’t forget about the 2014 Miss Universe Pageant Sunday night. This train wreck is always fun television. It’s far more of an entertaining train wreck than the Pro Bowl. Here’s our handy GUIDE to get you up to date on the favorites to win.
