Philly Weekend Preview 2/13/15
There’s a ton going on this weekend, particularly with music. Here are our top picks for the weekend.
Get to The Winter Lodge at RiverRink on Penn’s Landing for ice skating, cocktails, smores and fire pits. This is every weekend….for a few more weeks.
The PHILADELPHIA TATTOO ARTS CONVENTION runs this weekend in Philadelphia. Have tattoos? Like tattoos? This is the place to be. Local and national legends will be in the house and displaying their work. There should be a bunch of good seminars through the weekend, too. For more info
Comedian JEN KIRKMAN hits Helium this Friday and Saturday. She narrates some of the Drunk History episodes and was a regular guest of Chelsea Lately. She’s also appeared on the Tonight Show, Late Late Show with Craig Ferguson…info
Exhumed Filmes Presents DAVID CRONENBERG TRIPLE FEATURE Friday night at the International House. The films start at 7:30 and features Scanners, The Dead Zone, and Naked Lunch. Naked Lunch can be hard to get through, but a double feature of Scanners and Dead Zone is a solid bill. Info.
50 CENT is at the Electric Factory Friday night. Tickets are like $55. G-Unit will be joining him. Info.
Also on Friday night, the Kimmel Center Presents SHARON JONES & THE DAP KINGS. If you’re not familiar with Sharon Jones and her work, do that immediately after listening to the new Jawnville Podcast. I’ll be in attendance at this concert. Sharon Jones, in my opinion, is one of the better artists currently going. She’s a true throwback to the classic R&B/Soul genre. Info
If you’re in the mood for more reasonably priced live music, you’re in luck. Philadelphia’s RUBY THE HATCHET hits the Underground Arts Friday night. This band produces some great psychedlic stoner rock. Info.
Saturday take the kids the to the The Franklin Institute ART OF THE BRICK to enjoy the world’s largest gallery of LEGO art! This art gallery features over 100 LEGO creations made from more than a million LEGO bricks, all from the mind of famed contemporary artist Nathan Sawaya. This collection of sculptures includes a variety of Sawaya’s original concepts as well as a 20-foot-long Tyrannosaurus Rex made from over 80,000 LEGO bricks! Also on display are interpretations of historic works such as Leonardo Da Vinci’s Mona Lisa, Vincent Van Gogh’s Starry Night, and Edvard Munch’s The Scream–all made entirely of LEGO bricks! Info.
•Or…take them Ice Skating at Riverrink as noted about. It’s gonna be cold on Sunday!
Saturday night, NORTHERN ARMS has their record release party. If you don’t have a date for Valentine’s Day or don’t wanna pay the crazy restaurant prices, I’d recommend checking out this show at Johnny Brenda’s. Northern Arms are a local 10-piece band that has a great grass roots rock sound to them. Info.
Weekends have the FREE tours at YARD’S BREWING COMPANY on Columbus Boulevard. Children are not permitted on Saturdays. Info.
Thems the picks. Sunday may be too cold to venture outside so we’re saying catch up on some Oscar nominated movies or hunker in and watch some college hoops.
