Hallelujah Flyers

I did my best, it wasn’t much
I couldn’t feel, so I tried to touch
I’ve told the truth, I didn’t come to fool you
And even though
It all went wrong
I’ll stand before the Lord of Song
With nothing on my tongue but Hallelujah

~Leornard Cohen

The Flyers collapsed in the third period of Saturday’s game against the Bruins and basically crushed any minute chance of catching Boston and punching a ticket to the NHL Playoffs. If anyone still had hopes of a Flyer run, they had to be complete extinguished with the Flyers losing to the Devils on Sunday and the Bruins winning again. As of today, the Flyers are now 7 points out with 15 games to play and two teams (Ottawa/Florida) ahead of them. It’s over. HALLELUJAH.

The Flyers were not winning the Stanley Cup this year. No chance. No how. There was nothing to gain by getting into the playoffs. There is, however, something to be gained by missing them.

powerballIf you’re like me, chances are you buy a ticket for those $500M Powerball drawings. This year’s NHL Draft is the equivalent of a $500M Powerball drawing…maybe more. $500M Powerball drawings happen every year or so. The likes of Connor McDavid, this year’s top NHL prospect, might come along once a decade.

Yes, we buy those big prized Powerball tickets even though our odds of winning areĀ 1 in 175,223,510.00. Right now, the Flyers are the 9th worst team in the NHL. That means they have a 5% chance of getting the first overall pick, under the current NHL draft system. That’s 1 in 20, far better than 1 in 175,223,510.00, yet we still play the Powerball with hope.

Erie Otters v Windsor SpitfiresLet’s have hope. If you’re not familiar with Connor McDavid, he’s an 18 year old center playing for the Erie Otters in the OHL. In 42 games this year, 40 goals and 70 assists for 110 points. That’s 2.6 points/game, the same average Eric Lindros had in his best OHL season. McDavid’s +/- rating is a +50.

As they say, you can’t win if you don’t play. Look on the positive side of this bad Flyers season. They’re playing in the NHL’s version of Powerball. The Flyers have a ticket. Actually, to talk in Powerball terms, the Flyers have the equivalent of 8,761,175 Powerball tickets. 8 MILLION. That’s the amount of tickets that would give you a 5% chance of winning Powerball.

Be honest, if you have over 8 million Powerball tickets, you’d be pretty hopefull. The Flyers are out of the NHL Playoffs. HALLELUJAH!

Remember, every additional loss is more tickets to the lottery.
