Philadelphia Weekend Picks: 4-24-15
There’s a ton to do this weekend. Here are the Philadelphia Weekend Picks that we think will make your weekend fantastic! The picks include some great music. Get out and about!
FRIDAY:
WEST PHILADELPHIA ORCHESTRA is playing 2 sets at Johnny Brenda’s Friday night. The first set is 10:00PM and the second set is at midnight. This is the absolute best Balkan Band in the country. If you haven’t seen, check them out. Pitch Blak, a brass hip-hop band from Brookly opens. Should be a fun show.
Franky Bradley’s hosts YORK STREET HUSTLE on Friday night. Showtime is 10:00 PM. This group is the best cover band I’ve had the pleasure of watching. They focus on old school R&B and Motown style music. This 10 piece is a blast to watch peform.
LOW CUT CONNIE are having an album release party at Underground Arts Friday night. Hi Honey is the third record for this Philly duo. They’ve got a nice rock and soul feel to them. The Silks are supporting.
PHILADELPHIA SCIENCE FESTIVAL kicks off Friday night and run all week long. Get your geek on and your drink on. Many events are taking place at bars across the city. The astronomy nights are always a fun event and free. Volunteers usually bring out their high-powered telescopes for celestial views. Science is good. Get out to an event. Take the kids. For more info, check HERE!
SATURDAY
PORTSIDE COMMUNITY ARTS FESTIVAL takes place on Saturday from 12-5 pm at Penn Treaty Park. This was called the Lehigh Avenue Arts Festival for the past 7 years, but grew too large for the Avenue to handle. There are activities for kids and teens, food trucks, live performances. Activities will include face paiting, tie dye, printmaking, sand art, etc.
17th Annual Manayunk BBQ, Bourbon, and Blues Craft Beer Fest. Now in it’s 17th year, this beer lover’s delight offers 4+ hours of tastings of 60+ craft beers made by some of the best craft breweries. Enjoy live blues & bands all day long. Multiple serving areas & rooms! Plus, this yearthey’ve added bourbon samples, BBQ samples, vendors, and more!! Tickets are $50 for general admission and include beer, beer sampling glass, bbq samples and bourbon.
CENTER CITY JAZZ FESTIVAL winds down this Saturday. The final day includes shows at Fergies, Franky Bradley’s, Chris’ Jazz Cafe, & Milkboy Philadelphia. I would recommend either The Sermon at 1:00 at Franky Bradley’s and West Philadelphia Orchestra at Milkboy at 1:30. Full Schedule is HERE.

PHILADELPHIA SCIENCE FESTIVAL!
The female-fronted power-pop band EX HEX hits Union Transfer Sunday night. They’ve got a good glam/punk vibe going with a sound that might remind you of some old Cheap Trick. Some have compared them to the Cars. Good stuff.
