Philly Weekend Picks: 4th of July

Jawnville’s Philly Weekend Picks for the 4th of July are here. They are a little scarce due to the holiday, but we got some good stuff for you!

FRIDAY:

It’s the weekend and it’s Fourth of July weekend so you might as well kick it off drinking the ALES OF THE REVOLUTION from the folks over that Yards Brewing from 5-8 p.m. at Carpenters’ Hall 320 Chestnut Street. This is a free event where you can mingle with colonial costumed individuals and drink some true old school beers while getting a history lesson.

FIRST FRIDAY HISTORY AND HORROR is happening at Christ Church Burial Ground at 5th and Arch Streets. It’s $15 admission for a tour and movie. This includes a tour of the burial ground for many revolutionary soliders, the Betsy Ross House and a showing of Not of this Earth at dusk.

SMALL TALK opens at the LMNL Gallery at 1526 Frankford Avenue. I’m gonna try to check out this opening. This show is being curated by Phantom Hand, a collective of young Philadelphia illustrators. For this show, they had the illustrators go out into the world (bars, coffee shops, parks, etc) and sketch from live and take notes from eavesdropping. The opening goes from 6-9 p.m. on Friday.

Get over to Independence Hall Friday at 8 p.m. for POPS ON INDEPENDENCEThe Philly POPS perform this free, patriotic celebration of the America’s birthday. This performance includes: conductor Michael Krajewski, The Voices of The Philly POPS, and returning vocal powerhouse Capathia Jenkins, along with award-winning Broadway vocalist Darius de Haas. It’s rare to watch this kind of talent for free!

WEST PHILADELPHIA ORCHESTRA is playing Friday so you know I’ll be there. This is at Underground Arts. The bill for this show is pretty killer. Opening is Johnny Showcase. So, you get the best Balkan, gypsy, brass band in the country with the soulful crooning of Johnny Showcase. Door are at 8 p.m. It don’t get much more entertaining than this for $10.

SATURDAY:

This is Philly’s party. The Wawa Welcome America featuring the roots on the steps of the Art Museum with fireworks following. Yeah, it’s crowded and people can be a pain in the ass, but it’s free and the fireworks are the best you’ll between New York and DC.  Though, I gotta say, the lineup of acts aren’t that intriguing, aside from The Roots. Wawa must not be selling enough hoagies at Hoagiefest!

SUNDAY:

CRASH BANG BOOM 10TH ANNIVERSARY PARTY! If you spent time on South Street back in the day you know of Zipperhead the store. 10 years ago people working a Zipperhead bought the business and changed the name to Crash Bang Boom. Sunday marks the 10th anniversary of that transition. This is still the place to go for a Misfits, Bad Brains, or Black Flag shirt. The party is all ages at The Legendary Dobbs and goes 2:30 p.m. to 7 p.m. $5. Bands include: eenage Chainsaw, The Dead Suits, Posers, Live Not On Evil, Severed, The Charley Few, Fight Fuck or Dance, Anti Suburbans, and Gash.

That’s the roundup. There isn’t much going on outside of the 4th of July celebrations. With that, BBQ’s and people hitting the shore, it’s a great time to enjoy on of Philly’s beer gardens if you don’t have anything else to do.
