Philly Weekend Picks: July 17

It’s Friday so here are Jawnville’s Philly Weekend Picks for things to do this weekend. Do Something.

HEY HOOPHEADS: The Basketball Tournament (TBT) is in town all weekend with their Northeast Regionals. This is a million dollar tournament made up of teams from across the county. Two squads to watch are one of former Syracuse players called Boeheim’s Army and one of former LaSalle players called 20th & Olney. The games are held up at Philadelphia University and day passes are $20.

FRIDAY:

If you haven’t seen PHILADANCO  perform, shame on you. The Philadelphia dance company is legendary as they travel the world performing. They are truly one of the few local treasures that the entire world recognizes. Every year they do a Founders Day Concert to honor their founder, Joan Myers Brown. DANCO AT THE DELL is Friday at 7:00 p.m. an only $15 for some tickets, which is a bargain for Philadanco. Get out and see some of the best dancers in the world…and they’re based in Philly!

RUBY THE HATCHET is one of my favorite local bands. They’re bringing their take on stoner-rock to the Underground Arts tonight along with Electric Citizen. Doors are at 8 and tickets are $14. Seriously, guitar tones don’t get much better.

Attention Metalheads: Rockstar Energy’s MAYHEM FESTIVAL hits Susquehanna Bank Center all day Friday, starting at 1 p.m. Hopefully, you are already aware. This is just a reminder. Slayer headlines. Other acts appearing include: King Diamond, Hellyeah, The Devil Wears Prada, Thy Art is Murder, and tons more.

SATURDAY:

The Swedes are partying Saturday from 5-8 p.m. at SmörgåsBeer’d down at the American Swedish History Museum in FDR Park. Enjoy local brews, Swedish lagers and a buffet of Swedish style foods. They are calling this “a taste of Sweden meets the Philadelphia beer scene.” Breweries partaking include Yards, Brooklyn, Dogfish Head, Vault and more. Tour the museum, eat and drink all for $25!

4th Annual Dog Days of Summer Hot Dog Cook-off is at Headhouse Square Saturday from 12-4 p.m. Dozens of the area’s best restaurants and food trucks compete for the Dog Days Trophy. Beer, ice cream and music will also be happening. Swift Technique provides the tunes. They are worth checking out alone. Funds raised go to the preservation of the historic Headhouse Square Shambles, America’s oldest surviving Colonial-era marketplace.

SETH MCFARLANE with the BALTIMIORE SYMPHONY is at the Mann Music Center Saturday at 8 p.m. Should be a fun night of Seth’s humor and singing with the talented Symphony behind him. Not much more to say. You’re either a fan of Seth or you’re not. If you’re not, you may have zero sense of humor.

Punk rock legends X are at Underground Arts on Saturday. This band has been going for three decades and remain one of the most influential bands from the late 70’s punk movement. This is a great venue to check out the legends for only $25.

The People’s Emergency Center is excited to host the 9th Annual Lancaster Ave Jazz and Arts Festival, featuring internationally renowned saxophonist Sonny Fortune along with other brilliant musical acts. This one-day free, family-friendly outdoor festival will on Saturday, July 18th from 12 to 7pm in Saunders Park Green at 39th and Powelton Ave.  Food trucks, children’s activities, art vendors, resources, and a computer pop-up lab are just some of the great highlights for the whole family! Performers include: Sonny Fortune, Charlene Holloway Band, Kimperdro Nu Gruv, Sistahs Layin Down Hands, Vince Turnbull, Glenn Bryan and Friends.

SUNDAY

Celebrate Belgian Independence Day at the South Street Pop-up Beer Garden (1438 South Street) on Sunday from noon until 10 p.m. The Garden will be serving a nice selection of Belgian and Belgian-style beers throughout the day including Duvel, Ommegang, La Chouffe, Rare vos and others.
