Philly Weekend Picks: 8/28/15 – 8/30/15
The Philly Weekend Picks are here. This weekend we’ve got a bunch of good music shows that stand out among the events going on in the city. If you’re not into live music, we’ve got a few other great options. Enjoy the weekend!
FRIDAY:
Sydney Australia’s ROYAL HEADACHE hit PhilaMOCA in support of their second album. Their clean brand of fuzzy garage rock is always a good listen. Live show is supposed to be spot on. The show is currently sold out, but maybe you can score some tickets on craigslist. Good luck!
EARTH hit the stage at Underground Arts on Friday. Yes, the Earth that put out records as far back as 1989. Earth’s sound has changed a bit over the years. The sound has lost some of its dark, fuzzy foundation and added some country and folk influences over the years.
Philly’s own GRANDCHILDREN are at Johnny Brenda’s on Friday night. This is an album release party for Zuni, the band’s third release. These guys do a nice blend of indie/pop and intimate/grandiose. They describe their music as orchestral pop with tight beats.
SATURDAY:
Stressed out from life, work, family, unrealized dreams? Dig Yoga in Philly is offering Exploring Mantra | Sounds, Chants, & Discovery with Erick DuPree, a workshop to give ya some tools to handle that stress. On Saturday, Dig is offering a workshop on mantra/sound meditation. As a practitioner of mantra meditation, I can tell you this stuff is powerful and it works with time and practice. It can be intimidating so this looks like the perfect introduction to get you on a path to adding some beneficial meditation to your world. It’s cheap too, $35. Some charge upwards of $1,000 to learn some mantra techniques. Namaste!
The annual PHILLY NAKED BIKE RIDE pedals its way throw center city Saturday afternoon. If you got a bike, you might as well head over. You don’t have to get naked. Just put on some shorts. They have bodypainting available. Bikers meet up at 12:30 p.m. to chill with some pre-ride activities, then hit the road at 3 p.m.
The quintessential Black Sabbath tribute band SABBRA CADABRA is at Kung Fu Necktie Saturday night. These guys kill it! If you’re a Sabbath fan, get your ass out to this show. It’s an early show, too, for the oldheads. 7:00 p.m. $10.
The 40TH STREET SUMMER SERIES on the green area behind the Walnut Street Library at 40th Street continues this Saturday with Sun Ra Arkestra. The Arkestra puts on a show that is entertaining and visually interesting. The show is at 6:00 p.m.. It’s a family-friendly event with free Ben & Jerry’s Ice Cream and soft pretzels while supplies last.
SUNDAY:
The PHILLY ZINE FEST happens Sunday at the Rotunda at 40th & Walnut Streets. Before there were independent podcasts spreading news, information and opinions digitally, there were independent zines. This festival celebrates this art form. This is the oldest small press festival in Philly. Over 40 zines will be in attendance. It’s free and starts at noon.
