Chip is a FRAUD. Just like I told you.
If you’re an Eagles fan, the loss to the Cowboys on Sunday may have been the most frustrating game in recent history.
If you also happen to be a “Chipbot,” such as me, who believed in Chip’s methods and gave him the benefit of the doubt, the loss was especially excruciating thanks to some fellow “Eagles” fans.
I received a trolling Facebook message during the Packers/Seahawks game from a buddy who has been skeptical of Chip. He’s pretty much skeptical of everything, unless analytical math nerds say it. He may have a Billy Beane tattoo. I guess because Chip hadn’t won a Super Bowl in his first two years. The two 10-6 seasons weren’t good enough.
Here’s the message I got:
Chip is a FRAUD. Just like I told you.
The dude who sent it is a decent, converted Eagles fan (Cowboys fan as a youth) and has lived in Philadelphia for more than a dozen years. By now, he should know better than to send that kind of message to another Eagles fan on the night of such a disastrous loss to the Cowboys. The wounds of the day were still raw. For us Eagles lifers, those wounds cut deep.
Who wants to or needs to hear the “I told you so” while trying to drown the memory of the day at the bottom of a bottle of whiskey? What’s the point? To have someone tell you that you were right? Is being right and inflicting more insult to injury to your fellow Eagles fans that important to the ego?
Apparently, it is. Those “I told you so” characters also hit the sportstalk airwaves. They all give it to you with the caveat of “I wish I wasn’t right.” Yeah, sure you do. You wish you weren’t right, but didn’t hesitate to say you were after two games. Granted, they were two ugly games, but relax chief!
Was my buddy and the rest of the I-told-you-so people right?
Is Chip a fraud?
FRAUD: a person who pretends to be what he or she is not in order to trick people
What has Chip pretended to be? He’s never called himself a genius. He’s never pretended to be anything than a guy who has his own theory and method of coaching football. He’s never promised anything. He’s never said he’s the savior. People around him may have, but that’s not him
I don’t know about frauds winning 10 games two straight years at the NFL level. It’s not like Chip Kelly is David Shula. That dude was a fraud. Things clearly have not been David Shula bad.
Is the season over at 0-2? The Eagles are in the woeful NFC East. The Giants are 0-2. The Redskins stink. The Cowboys have injuries out the wazoo. Vegas currently has the Eagles STILL favored to win the NFC East.
Chip never claimed to be an NFL Personnel guru. He didn’t approve of the way Howie Roseman fired his friend Tom Gamble so he fought for control after Gamble’s dismissal. That’s understandable.
He’s not a fraud, but he is a guy who seems to undervalue offensive lineman in the draft and free agency, which is odd for a guy who comes from coaching the offensive line of the ball. He definitely undervalues guards and overestimated the talents of Allen Barbre and Andrew Gardner.
The offensive line isn’t blocking anyone. Joe Montana would look ordinary behind this line. Walter Payton would look like Ryan Moats behind this line. If Kelly is going to be a failure at the NFL level, it’ll be because of his offensive line. Even Kelce and Celek, two reliable blockers, were missing blocks all over the place on Sunday.
Am I still a Chipbot? I guess so. I’m a “In Chip I Trust” guy until they are officially eliminated from the Playoffs. Then, I can say that I trusted him and he did me wrong. It must be hard to be the I-told-you-so-guys being all smart and stuff and then finding solace whether the Eagles win or lose. If Chip goes 6-10 and I’m still a Chipbot, throw some water in face and bring me back to reality.
That being said, stop worrying about being right or wrong and let’s come together as fans and see where this season goes.
I’m still on board with Chip Kelly, but at this point I’m all out of Kool-aid and I’m f**king thirsty!
E-A-G-L-E-S!
*disclaimer: I was against Kelly hiring and wanted Gus Bradley.
