Philly Weekend Picks: 10/23-25

-First of all, it’s a week before Halloween. Get yer asses to a haunted something. I still think that the folks over at Eastern State Penitentiary do the best in the area with Terror Behind the Walls. While some places are like ten minutes to get through, Terror Behind the Walls is a good length and there is no better location for haunted anything than the prison itself.

-Also, the 24th Philadelphia Film Festival begins this weekend and goes through November 1st. This festival has films for you, no matter what genre of film is your preference. I gotta say, one of the highlights has to be A VERY SCARY SLEEPOVER: WES CRAVEN’S HALLOWEENNIGHTMARE brought to you by the peeps over at Awesomefest. This event is at the Prince Theater and goes from October 31st 11 a.m. to November 1st 6 a.m. Admission is $25 and you can come and go as you want. The films featured will be:

The Last House On The Left
The Hills Have Eyes
The People Under The Stairs
Scream (w/ Jamie Kennedy in attendance!)
A Nightmare On Elm Street
A Nightmare On Elm Street 2: Freddy’s Revenge
A Nightmare On Elm Street 3: Dream Warriors
A Nightmare On Elm Street 4: The Dream Master
A NIghtmare On Elm Street 5: The Dream Child
Freddy’s Dead: The Final Nightmare
New Nightmare

Here’s the schedule for the entire Film Festival. Take your significant other and see some good flicks, or go with friends, or go solo. The Festival works for everyone! Just don’t go Sunday night while the Eagles are on SNF.

FRIDAY:

Connie’s Ric Rac hosts ROCKTOBERFEST Friday night. If you want a good night out with solid rock music, head to South Philly. Performers include Custom Power Ride, Sweet Eureka, Zymotic Flow and Endless Taile!4 good bands for a measly $8 and cheap drinks.

SATURDAY:

-Philadelphia’s First Annual CHEESESTEAK FESTIVAL hits Lincoln Financial Field 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. There will be 40 different cheesesteak samples. Steve’s Prince of Steaks will be creating the world’s largest cheesesteak. They should have music and carnival games. *updated, this even is sold out so you’re gonna have to be creative getting tix.

-Gonna be great weather for the 9th Annual PAWS Mutt Strutt down at the Navy Yard. This annual tradition has dogs and the people who love them walk the scenic route in The Navy Yard to raise funds and awareness for PAWS’ efforts to save Philadelphia’s homeless, abandoned, and unwanted animals. PAWS does great work and this is a fun event. It’s like a giant pack walk with hundreds of dogs and their guardians. If you don’t have a dog, there are shelter dogs available to rent for the day. You might make a new best friend or simply give a shelter dog a fun morning walk. Do it!!! Registration is $25/person with kids under 12 free!

Fall Fest & Spooky Saturday goes from 11a.m – 4p.m. down on East Passyunk Ave.  This is a kid-friendly event that will feature some fine food from along the Avenue. A bunch of bands will provide music along with free activities like pumpkin decorating, arts/crafts, costume contests, trick or treating down the avenue, moon bounce and more

-The Legendary Robert Drake and other talented folks (bands & DJs) will provide music for the 2015 Zombie Prom at the Troc. It’s pretty self-explanatory. Last year’s prom sold out so get on it! As they say, unleash your inner zombie.

Travel Channel did a feature on the Zombie Prom:

SUNDAY:

BOO AT THE ZOO is both Saturday and Sunday, but we’re recommending Sunday. There’s a bunch of stuff going on for Saturday. Boo at the Zoo is a great event to take the family to the zoo in costume for a creepy, crawly celebration with trick-or-treating and more. Activities include:

  • Do you know why Halloween is an orangutan’s favorite holiday at the Philadelphia Zoo? Be sure to visit the Sustainable Palm Zone during Boo at the Zoo to find out!
  • Take a walk through the Philadelphia Zoo’s not-so-scary Extinction Graveyard to learn about the extinction of species around the world. You’ll be shocked to see that some of your favorite creatures could be extinct in the wild in 15 years!
  • Enjoy festive fall offerings available for purchase throughout the Zoo: hot apple cider, reusable Boo at the Zoo trick-or-treat bags and much more! Pick up a Boo at the Zoo map at the entrance for all the details!
  • Set out on a Scarecrow Scavenger Hunt and discover your favorite animals in the form of life-size scarecrows!

Boo At the Zoo goes Sat & Sun from 10 a.m. – 4:00 p.m. and is included with admission to the zoo.

-If for some reason you aren’t watching the Eagles on Sunday night, then the only other thing we could recommend would be Peaches at the Troc. Yup, the Troc again. Peaches is a fucking crazy Canadian electronic-something artist. There is nothing and no one like Peaches so you can’t go wrong checking out this show. See for yourself:
