Dublin’s Oldest Pub Goes to the Birds
The Eagles have landed in Dublin, Ireland. It only took me eight hours to let the Dubliners know that Philly was in the house, but now they’ll know forever.
As someone who drinks my fair share of beers, I had to visit Brazen Head Pub. The Brazen Head is Dublin’s oldest pub. They claim it goes back to the 1198, but historians, I mean wikipedia, say the earliest mention of their license to sell booze is 1668. Either way, it’s fuckin’ old.
The place was packed—old-wall-to-old-wall—with over a hundred people jammed into a few different rooms. With perfect timing, we grabbed bar seats just as two people finished up. I took some immediate hits from a bartender named Jerry because of the Eagles hat I had proudly wore into the pub. I’m in Ireland. It’s green, kelly green, so it seemed completely appropriate. Jerry spent some years in Brooklyn and became a Giants fan for some reason. Great dude, aside from the G-men alliance. We broke each other’s stones for a bit.
A kid, maybe 20, approached with a compliment on my hat. He is an Eagles fan from Manchester on holiday in Dublin. He’s not a new Eagles fan hopping on the Super Bowl bandwagon. He rattled off memories of Westbrook, McNabb, and Dawkins. As we parted ways, I gave him a “Go Birds” to which he replied “Fly Eagles Fly.”
Three pints later, it was time to leave the Brazen Head in search of dinner. As we readied for the door, bartender Jerry approached with a large, leather-bound book. He asks, “would you like to sign our visitor’s log”?
Totally honored by the request, I immediately agreed. Once he handed me a green marker, I knew what I had to do. I signed the visitor’s book and this is the message I left for all who work and visit the Brazen Head Pub to see for as long as it remains:
That’s right. The Eagles Fight Song is forever memorialized in Dublin’s oldest pub and deservedly so. As I type this, I’m on a train sitting across from a couple from Atlanta HAHAHAHAHAHA. God, it’s good to be an Eagles fan.
BTW, I drank so much I added a fifth limb.
Thanks for reading. Share this jawn. Your friends will thank you.
