Did John Middleton Mean Stupid or Stupid?

Phillies owner John Middleton made a statement to USA Today’s Bob Nightengale that the Phillies “may even be a little stupid” about spending money this offseason.

Did John Middleton mean stupid or stupid? This is an important detail. The two “stupids” are drastically different from one another.

Since stupid in “may even be a little stupid” is an adjective, let’s look at the traditional sense of stupid as an adjective.

Definitely do not want Klentak, Middleton, and the Phillies going this route where they sign players to ridiculous contracts that make no sense just to win a dick-swinging contest. We don’t need J.A. Happ, C.C. Sabathia or Charlie Morton signed for five-year deals. We don’t need deals like the Carlos Santana deal.

Hopefully, Middleton meant stupid like slang stupid such as this:

This, I’m down with. Stupid as in large, outrageous, or enhancing spending positively is fine by me. Spending $40M/year on Bryce Harper or Manny Machado and Patrick Corbin for $22M/year would be ideal to me.

As a Phillies season-ticket holder, I’m just weary of bad contracts. The Phillies have the flexibility and cap space this offseason to change the direction of this franchise for the next decade. Let’s pray they use it to wisely spend stupid amounts of money instead of large amounts of money on stupid contracts.

I’m thinking Middleton meant stupid in the slang sense and I love him even more for it. Can’t wait for him to drop jawn next.

Yes, John Middleton please get stupid…just the right kind of stupid.
