Just Call Him Mr. Clutch

Saint Nick. Big Dick Nick. Foot-long Foles. The list of nicknames for Nick Foles goes on and on. There is one name that may suit him better than any other, Mr. Clutch.

There are two key “clutch” stats in the NFL. One measures 4th Quarter Come-From-Behind Wins. The other is Game-Winning Drives. I like Game-Winning Drives for a measurement of clutchness because it takes into account being behind in the 4th Quarter, but also drives in the 4th Quarter or Overtime that puts the winning team ahead for the last time. This would include games where the score is tied late into the 4th Quarter.

The two all-time leaders in NFL Game-Winning Drives are Peyton Manning (56) and Drew Brees (51). Nick Foles has 12, but has played in considerably less games.

Percentage-wise, where does Foles stand with the two best Game-Winning Drive Quarterbacks?

QBTotal Games PlayedGWD%GWD
Manning2935619.11%
Brees2775118.4%
Foles591220.33%

That’s right. Nick Foles has led game-winning drives at a higher percentage than both Peyton and Brees, the two all-time leaders.

Foles is as clutch as clutch can get. He is Mr. Clutch.

I still prefer BDN, though.
