Utility Companies Pushing to End the Shutoff Moratorium are the Worst
I did a double-take when I read a story the Inquirer article about the continuation of the moratorium on utility shutoffs. The unbelievable part read like this:
Utilities have been pressing regulators to lift the moratorium, which the PUC put into place in March under an emergency order.
Thankfully, the Public Utility Commission ignored pressure from utility companies and extended the moratorium.
Who the f*ck would actually lobby to end this moratorium at this moment in history? The country in the middle of a pandemic having death rates far higher than the rest of the world. Upwards of Americans are unemployed. Yet, some folks think it’s a good idea to be able to turn off utilities to those struggling financially.
The utility companies argued that people are not signing up for payment assistance because there is no threat of the utility being shut off. Who the hell cares?! It’s a pandemic with massive unemployment. Find another way to encourage people to sign up for assistance rather than cutting off their utilities. The last thing people need to be stressing about is paying their utilities. We’re lucky people can pay rent with the weak financial assistance from the federal government.
To those that are upset because they are paying their utilities, grow the f*ck up. Be thankful you can pay your rent, mortgage, and/or utilities during these trying times.
PECO says that 10% of their customers are in arrears. How will they survive? They should’ve saved money like the rest of us who were able to without having a NET INCOME OF $2.6 BILLION DOLLARS over the past 12 months. That’s not revenue. That’s net income after their cost of doing business. In fact, they’ve had over two billion dollars in net income each of the past four years. If they can’t survive with 10% of their customers not being paying their utilities during this crisis, the management of the utility companies should resign due to financial mismanagement.
The executives and lobbyists looking to end the moratorium have zero empathy or human decency. They exemplify everything that’s wrong with the greed in our society.
