Something to Watch: The Twelve
Like court dramas? Murder dramas? Jury duty or serving on a jury? If so, I got a series for you to binge over a week or weekend. Ten episodes about an hour-long. It’s called The Twelve.
Belgium produces great chocolate, beer, waffles, and baguettes. Who knew they produced good television because that’s what The Twelve is.
The Twelve is a courtroom drama from the perspective of the jurors. I loved the classic film Twelve Angry Men, and having been selected for a jury, I was intrigued.
WARNING! It’s in Flemish so you have to be cool with subtitles or be willing to use the English dubs. I did a little of each and both were totally fine.
A woman, in a very high profile case, is on trial for killing her infant toddler daughter after losing custody of her, as well as for the murder of her best friend many years earlier.
There are fourteen juror members, including the alternates. You learn the current situation and backstory of about eight of them. Each episode is named after the juror’s backstory that is featured, but other storylines are included.
It’s definitely cool to see the baggage and history that jurors bring to the case. You see the courtroom evidence and testimony that the jurors see as the series progresses.
Acting is good. Script is solid. There’s a few good twists and turns. I found myself shocked at how some jurors voted in the end. In the final episode, you see the verdict, and if the defendant actually did the crime.
Check it out if you’re looking for something to watch.
