Weekend Preview: October 10, 2014
Flyers play Saturday. Eagles play Sunday night! Tons of scary things to do around down to celebrate Hallowee (see earlier previews). You should have some free time to spend with the family and there are a few good options in our Best of the Weekend:
5th Annual BLACK LANDLORD BBQ is happening this weekend at the Uke Club (847 North Franklin Street). Black Landlord is one of the best original live bands in the city and this is a rare chance to check them out as they perform less and less. BBQ includes great food and a bunch of solid bands and DJ. I hear Black Landlord goes on about 4:00 p.m.
If you don’t know them, get to know them.
-The Oval is bumping again this weekend with the Philadelphia County Fair, which should be fun for all ages with seasonal activities and traditional fair fun. There will be a ferris wheel, food trucks, a wine and cider garden, face painting, zoo animals, and plenty of games. The full schedule of fun is available HERE.
-The 5th Annual Bloktoberfest hits South Street from Broad to 18th Street on Saturday from noon to 8 p.m. This is an all-ages, free-to-attend celebration of beer, food, music, and Philly. Bloktoberfest showcases a wide selection of beer by craft breweries from around the country, food from neighborhood vendors and food trucks, and multiple stages of live music featuring nationally recognized and emerging local acts. The event is not for profit, with beer proceeds directed back into a variety of neighborhood initiatives addressing education, green space and public safety.
–Subaru Family Moonviewing Weekend at the Shofuso Japanese House and Tea Garden in Fairmount Park takes place Saturday and Sunday. Otsukimi, or moon viewing, is a traditional celebration where offerings are made to the full moon to give thanks for a good harvest.
Shofuso hosts Otsukimi themed activities, a moonviewing party, and a moonviewing tea ceremony. A traditional Otsukimi offering table will be on display to bring good luck to all visitors. Activities for children will include celebrating Japanese foods and sweets, making origami, taiko drumming and storytelling performances. This is premium culture right here!
-Festival all over the place. The first annual Old City Fest is happening this Sunday. This is happening from noon to 6 p.m. on Arch Street between 2nd and 4th, and 3rd Street between Race and Market. Festival will include more than 100 Old City businesses will showcase Old City designers, creative firms, restaurants, retailers and galleries, as well as theater, cultural history and architecture. And….you can still get home in time to watch the Eagles game.
–Chocolate: The Exhibition opens Saturday at the Academy of Natural Sciences. Everyone loves chocolate so this is a museum experience that should appeal to all of us. FINALLY! The Exhibition traces the intriguing story of this “food of the gods” from its origin as a unique rainforest tree to the sensuous sweet millions of people crave today.
-Foxygen plays Union Transfer Friday night to fill your needs for a hipster live show.
WEEKEND TEASER: For the betting losers out there like myself we are back with our teaser pick for the weekend. This is our 3rd week of teasers and we are currently 3-1. This week the college teaser is Marshall, which is currently -25 over Middle Tennessee and Duke, which is currently +3 vs. Georgia Tech. That gives ya Marshall -19 and Duke +9.
In the NFL we are looking at the Broncos -9.5 vs. the Jets and the Over of 55 in the Falcons/Bears game. The tease gives us Broncos -3.5 and Over of 49 in the Bears/Falcons game.
That’s the preview. Get out and enjoy some Fall Festivals and good luck wagering!
