Weekend Preview: 11-21-14

It’s Philadelphia Marathon Weekend. The marathon takes place Sunday morning. Heads up for traffic issues! If you live near a cheering post grab a cup of coffee and head out to cheer on the runners.  Maps are available here.

I’ve heard great things about the Franklin Square Holiday Festival. I’ve actually seen a bunch of fun-looking pictures of Facebook of people at the Square drinking ciders and beers while sitting around fire pits. The Festival runs every day from 4:30-8:00 a light show featuring 50,000 lights and music by the PhillyPops happens every 30 minutes. The Festival has gift shops, bites to eat, mini golf, the Lightning Bolt Holiday Express.  It’s a good time for families between 4:00-8:00.  The Festival also includes a beer garden and Food Truck Fridays. I’m gonna try and get there sometime on Saturday.

Bob Dylan is in town all weekend performing at the Academy of Music. Even if you’re not a Dylan fan, per se, this is probably the time to see him. He’s not gonna be touring much longer and the Academy is an amazing venue to see musical legends. I dropped a truckload of cash to see Leonard Cohen a few years back and it was well worth it.  Good seats can be had on the secondary market.

The Free Library of Philadelphia’s Central Branch celebrates paper art at the annual Book Paper Scissors sale, presented by the Philadelphia Center for the Book. From 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. this Saturday, November 22, jump start your holiday shopping (and support the local art scene!) by browsing goods from artists as they set up shop peddling a variety of paper-based art. Guests can browse prints, books, journals, handmade paper, paper jewelry and more.

Craft workshops will round out the day’s events. A kid-friendly folding, stitching and gluing workshop, for easy bookmaking, is slated to run from 10 to 11 a.m., and a flag book workshop (similar to pop-up books), which is ideal for teens and adults, will occur from 2 to 3 p.m.

I like visiting the Weavers Way stand at the Headhouse Square Farmers Market. The Weavers Way people have their First Annual Weavers Way Chestnut Hill Apple Festival this Saturday.  Behind their store at 8424 Germantown Ave, you can enjoy a fresh, local apple market, cider, music, crafts and more.  At 5:30 p.m., you can bring garlands to the Woodmere Art Museum for an annual tree lighting ceremony.

If you’re a fan of filmmaker David Lynch’s Eraserhead pay attention.  When David Lynch moved to Philadelphia in the late 1960s to attend PAFA, he discovered a city that was both terrifying and inspiring. Explore the neighborhood that so electrified Lynch’s imagination with Hidden City’s Peter Woodall and Lynch–and Eraserhood–afficionado, Bob Bruhin. During this one-and-a-half hour walking tour, they’ll delve into the area’s industrial history, as well as the sights and sounds that inspired Lynch’s movies, particularly Eraserhead.

Yes, there is a new Hunger Games movie out this weekend. However, if you’re seeing a flick this weekend make sure that it’s Foxcatcher. If you’re from the area you probably remember the John DuPont incident involving an Olympic wrestler. Steve Carrell stars in a role that loses touch with sanity. My buddy did a bunch of the music for the film and he’s been raving about it for months. Stick around for the final song in the credits, which my buddy released years ago through my record label.  Here’s the trailer:

TEASER TIME: In college tease Virginia to +11 vs. Miami and Purdue to +5 vs. Northwestern. In the NFL, tease the Patriots at home vs. the Lions to -1 with the Broncos teased to -1 at home vs. the Dolphins.

Good Luck!
