Flyers Shooting Blanks
The Flyers’ inability to win shootouts is getting ridiculous. They may need an exorcism to rid the team of this shootout curse. Is that 0-10 since last year? I lost count. Harry’s Occult Shop is no more but the Mystical Emporium is on South Street. They have potions and stones to remove these funks. Somebody do something.
Once it’s time for the shootouts, the team expects to lose. The fans expect to lose. I watched the game in a local watering hole. A collective groan echoed through the half empty bar as overtime ended. Then people started venting out loud.
“It’s over!”
“They lost.”
“Why’s he coming so far out of net?”
“Do they even practice shootouts?”
That’s a valid question at this point. Do they practice shootouts?
Vinnie Lecavalier answered that question with a “not enough” after the game.
The team has zero confidence in its shootout skills at this point. Voracek said shootouts are usually 50/50, but for them it’s 10/90. Berube thinks its mental.
I’m with Berube. So, what are they doing about it? Get sports psychologist Dr. Fish to set their heads straight. Talk to a shaman, something.
As an opportunist, I might suggest they do that after the season. I’m okay with them losing these shootouts. First of all, it’s becoming comical to see how long this drought can go on. Secondly, the Flyers are still only 2 points away from being the 3rd worst team in the NHL. I still have my heart set on one of the top 3 picks in this year’s draft. Hinkie has me numb to it at this point, so the Flyers losing for the future doesn’t bother me so much.
I really have no interest in seeing the Flyers claw their way into the Playoffs just to get bounced in a round or two. They aren’t close to Stanley Cup caliber.
What’s the over/under on how many consecutive shootouts they go…..14? Over 14 at +150, Under 14 at -125. It can’t really go 14, can it? For the future, let’s hope so.
