A Fans View: Eagles Secondary STILL Weak Spot

Most teams playing with their backup quarterback for this long of a stretch wouldn’t even sniff the playoffs. I honestly don’t know how the Cardinals are doing it because they give up more yards in the air than the Eagles.  That must be a testament to Arians’ ability as a head coach. The Eagles were sniffing. They could and should be in the playoffs. They aren’t because of Chip Kelly and Howie Roseman.

People are roasting the Eagles secondary, me included. However, what did we expect? They stink. They’ve stunk. They were ranked 32nd, that’s last, in passing yards given up last year. Did Kelly and Roseman draft anyone to help the secondary? Nah. They drafted a project “pass-rusher” that can’t get on the field. Thought process must’ve been that the secondary would carry its weight if the Eagles had a pass rush. Well, they do have a pass rush (2nd in NFL in sacks) and the secondary still sucks, slightly less. I think they have given up the 25th most passing yards in the NFL.

Malcolm Jenkins, a nice players, but nowhere near the quality needed to get this secondary to a Super Bowl caliber level. This is like a time warp where Andy Reid refused to address the Wide Receivers. How do we know better? Christ, you just have to look at the stats to see these CBs and Nate Allen are not good enough. How is Nate Allen still on this club?

Someone needs to take responsibility for this secondary. I have a feeling Billy Davis will be the fall-guy, but it should fall on the shoulders or Roseman and/or Chip. Whoever decided that the only upgrades the secondary needed was to cut Patrick Chung and add Malcolm Jenkins needs to own that decision and face the questions that come along with such gross negligence.

The Eagle secondary was the absolute worst in the league last year and, yet, Jenkins was the ONLY tweak?

Now, the penalties? Penalties are always a sign of an undisciplined team and the defensive penalties fall on Billy Davis.  Davis seems like a good guy, but his adjustments have been questionable as the season progressed.

If I were the Eagles, and I’m not, I’d be offering Rex Ryan a chunk to come and run Chip’s defense. Ryan’s teams always play hard, even if he’s been hogtied by the NFL’s equivalent of Ruben Amaro, Jr as GM of the Jets.  The Jets defense this year has given up the 6th fewest yards in the league. Plus, we could always use those great foot jokes to make the season more interesting.
