Weekend Preview: 4/3/2015
Here are our picks for best weekend events in Philly for the weekend of 4/3/2015!
FRIDAY:
First Friday in Old City! It’s a little rainy, but the weather is definitely nice enough to walk up and down 2nd and 3rd Streets in Old City to see the best of local and not-so-local artists. One standout is InLiquid’s artist members David Deakin, Cheryl Harper, and the collective Johnny Everyman will present works addressing political topics and themes concerning Philadelphia and beyond through various mediums, including digital prints, painting, and mixed media in Symbolic Speech, Freedom of Expression at the Painted Bride.
After First Friday in Old City you can hop over to the Fringe Arts for The World is a Screen as part of their First Friday Music Concerts on the Fringe. This month’s installment is curated by Kate Watson-Wallace & King Britt and features five experimental artists who approach their art cinematically and who have never before shared a stage come together to create an improvisational score for each other’s work in real-time.
April is also Philadelphia’s Jazz Appreciation Month. Great acts and events are going on throughout the city. Friday features Turkish Jazz: The Secret Trio as part of the Philadelphia Museum of Art’s Art After 5 series. The Secret Trio perform a collection of original pieces and traditional melodies that fuses the microtonal modes and improvisation of the Middle East, dance beats of the Balkans, and elements of jazz, rock, classical and world music. FREE
SATURDAY
The Great Philadelphia Comic Con 2015 will be April 3rd-5th, 2015 at The Greater Philadelphia Expo Center in Oaks, PA. I have issues with Philadelphia’s Comic Con taking place in Oaks, but this should be a blast regardless. George Takei is gonna be there on Saturday so that’s te day you should go!
Philly’s own TJ Kong & the Atomic Bomb have a record release party at Johnny Brenda’s Saturday Night. TJ Kong & the Atomic Bomb have been described as “A cross between the Mountain Goats, Tom Waits and the ghost of Captain Beefheart serenading the crowd at a drunken rodeo.” Specifically, they are a Rock N Roll band from Philadelphia fronted by Dan Bruskewicz, Bar stool Poet Laureate and Patron Saint of boiled peanuts. Easily one of the best, most original acts in Philadelphia.
PhilaMOCA celebrates women and rock along with She Shreds Magazine Saturday featuring 4 kick-ass bands: SWEARIN’, AMANDA X, MANNEQUIN PUSSY, ANOMIE. Show is $10 // ALL AGES // FIRST BAND AT 7:30PM.

The highlight of the weekend is, without a doubt, the 10th Annual Zombie crawl. They’ve been doing this before zombies were all the rage in pop culture. The crawl starts at 5 p.m. at Starr Garden (6th & South) and heads to South Street for the announcement of the winning zombies at The Legendary Dobbs. After that, they zombies partake in a crawl around local bars
