Sandberg Resigns….jumps ship!

In what may have been the smartest move of Ryne Sandberg’s coaching career, he has officially resigned. I don’t blame him for trying to leave with some dignity. I can’t say that I’m disappointed. I haven’t been a fan of Sandberg the manager since he was hired. He wasn’t a fit for this team or this city. You gotta believe that he knew he was going to be fired and wanted to get out ahead of it. I can’t believe that he’s giving up because he was losing. If so, he’s definitely not the leader the Phillies thought he was.

This had to be one of the weirdest press conferences. It felt like a funeral at times. Sandberg was emotion. Amaro sounded like he was on the brink of crying. Maybe the guilt of destroying the franchise and Sandberg’s managerial career is getting to Amaro. Why couldn’t Ruben have stepped down as well when he was describing that he was also taking responsibility for the Phillies losing.

Quite honestly, Sandber, Gillick, and Amaro looked like the Three Stooges sitting on the dais. The moment would have been appropriate for all three of them to resign.

Sandberg could’ve been a good trooper and went down with Ruben’s ship, but he doesn’t need the stress of managing a triple A squad at the major league level. I’m a loyal guy, but there’s no way in hell that I’d be loyal to Ruben.

Pete MacKanin has “graciously agreed to take over the interim managerial duties.” Ha! I can imagine them asking Bowa and Bowa responding with a “hell no!”

Sandberg looks like a good dude. I feel bad that he got caught in the Amaro shrapnel. However, I’m glad he’s no longer the manager. Can’t understand why Ruben isn’t man enough to resign.

On a side note, Sandberg said his decision was informed Gilick and Amaro this morning. Coincidentally, he delivered the news on a Friday after when all PR people release bad news???
