Philly Weekend Picks: 8/21-8/23
It’s Friday, again. The summer is wrapping up and people are at the shore. There isn’t a ton of stuff going on this weekend that we deem Jawnville-worthy, but there’s some great music options. Here’s the best of the best:
FRIDAY:
ADIA VICTORIA takes the stage at Johnny Brenda’s Friday night. Rolling Stone describes Adia as: PJ Harvey covering Loretta Lynn at a haunted debutante ball. Need I say any more? Adia was born in South Carolina and currently calls Nashville home. Adjectives thrown about regarding Adia Victoria include sexy, dark, angry, aggressive and opinionated. Tickets are $10. Doors are 9:00 p.m. She hits the stage about 11:00 p.m.
The live show and podcast RISK! is at Underground Arts Friday night at 8:00 p.m. RISK! is a live show and podcast where people tell true stories they never thought they’d dare to share. Founded in 2009 by Kevin Allison of MTV’s legendary sketch comedy show, The State, RISK! has been downloaded tens of millions of times and has featured incredible true stories from Sarah Silverman, Kevin Nealon, Dan Savage, Margaret Cho, Andy Dick, Michael Ian Black, and regular folks from around the world. Tickets are $25.
SATURDAY:
The Martha Graham Cracker Cabaret celebrates her 10 Year Extravaganza at Union Transfer with Johnny Showcase & the Mystic Ticket and Red 40 & the Last Groovement. This Cabaret is truly one of the more entertaining local shows you’ll see all year. I’m not normally a drag show fan, but Martha is in another stratosphere. Johnny Showcase and Red 40 aren’t slouches in any way either. Great bill! Good music and laughs.
PhilaMOCA hosts the Philly Premiere of “the ultimate summertime nostalgia film,” The Incredible Adventures of Jojo (and his annoying sister Avila). PhilaMOCA will be screening the film simultaneously indoors and on the roof for max summertime vibes. “This is not a film for overprotective parents. Boys use pocket knives. Girls eat bugs.” So begins the fantasy adventure of six-year-old Jojo and his baby sister Avila who are forced to brave the wilderness alone following a car accident. The two of them battle against the odds as they try to escape a deranged hobo, a ravenous pack of wolves, some dirty diapers, abandoned couches, and the violent fury of Mother Nature. Showtime is at dusk. Doors at 7:30 p.m. $10
WXPN presents The 1st Annual Philadelphia Country Music Festival on Saturday at Bob & Barbara’s Lounge at 1509 South Street. This is an all day festival with an indoor and outdoor stage featuring traditional country music, not that annoying pop-country. The music starts at noon and is FREE, aside from food and drinks.
SUNDAY:
Veg out at the local beer gardens!
