Philly Sports Fan Diary: 1/13/16
Dear Diary:
I found this quote from Jeff Lurie from 2014 about winning a Super Bowl (via ESPN):
I’m obsessed with it. If you love the sport as much as I do, and you love this team and this city as much as I do, that’s the ultimate goal. Until that happens, it’s a hunger. And even if it does happen, it will be a hunger because you don’t want to just be satisfied to have it happen once. It’s my obsession, trying hard to make it happen.”
The first problem with this quote is that he’s “trying” to make it [Super Bowl] happen. I was taught long ago that trying implies failure. You don’t try to win a Super Bowl. You win a Super Bowl. You work on winning a Super Bowl. Our Philadelphia Eagles may need an adjustment of perspective from the top down.
I’m glad we have an owner in town that is “obsessed” with winning a Super Bowl. I’m a little confused though. Pretend I hit Powerball and was building my dream house. I hire a contractor that is relatively unknown. For a while the progress is amazing. Friends stop by to laud the progress. The design is beautiful. The windows are breathtaking. Things are going great for a while. Then, he never puts a roof on the house. Years go by and no roof. When looking for a new contractor or roofer, why would I ask the first guy who couldn’t finish the job for a recommendation or referral? People would think I was crazy.
That’s what Lurie seems to be doing here. He’s obsessed with winning a Super Bowl and asking the guy who couldn’t win one for him to recommend someone who can. That’s an odd line of thinking. I’m so confused.
Sigh, another day closer to Doug Pederson as Eagles head coach.
