RANT: Stop Making Calls at the Gym

Hey you…at the gym on your phone. No, not you. You’re just using your phone, not talking on it. I’m talking to the JO behind you. Yeah, you…the person having a phone call while on the stationary bike. Here’s a newsflash: NO ONE WANTS TO HEAR YOUR PHONE CALL.

Going to the gym sucks. It’s a chore. It’s a place that most people dread going and have to physically and mentally drag themselves to. You, the person engaged in a phone call, make it even harder to get to the gym because you make it unbelievably annoying.

What’s the harm you say? It’s fucking distracting. It’s obnoxious. While I’m fighting to get through forty minutes on the bike, treadmill, or elliptical hoping the time flies by getting lost in music or a show on my phone, you keep bringing me back to reality.

Is someone talking to me? I pause my music, remove my earphones. Nope. It’s just you on the phone talking.

You’re grating, boisterous laugh penetrates my noise-canceling earbuds on the regular. I hear about your kids, your doctor appointments, a date you have later tonight. I hear it all and it makes me want to smash my forehead into the mirror in front of the cardio machines.

Everyone hears you. Everyone loathes you. Please, for the love of all that is civil and courteous, if you have to make or answer a phone-call go into the hallway, stairwell, locker room or at least use a library voice. It’s a total violation.

Besides, if you’re able to carry on a conversation while you are working out, you aren’t working out. You’re hanging out.

And hey…person-who-doesn’t-wipe-down-machines-after-you-use-them..don’t get too comfy. You are almost as bad.
