Dave “The Hammer” Schultz Released a Song

While digging for around for a history of Flyers goal songs, I came across this little nugget. It’s a 7-inch 45 RPM single from 1975 by Broad Street Bullies enforcer Dave “The Hammer” Schultz titled The Penalty Box.

The song was recorded at Society Hill Sound and written by Philly producer and songwriter Kal Mann. Mann actually won a Grammy for his work on Chubby Checker’s Let’s Twist Again.

I assumed it would be an angry rock song. Instead, we hear a soft-spoken Dave Schultz crooning over a track that sounds more like a 70’s sitcom theme song.

The B-side Your Way’s Right for You was written by Vincent Montana, Jr, who was a member of MFSB (Mothers Fathers Sisters Brothers). Montana, Jr has been called the Godfather of disco. MFSB was a collection of studio musicians at Sigma Sound Studios who often worked with Gamble and Huff and backed up Harold Melvin and the Blue Notes and the O’Jays.

Your Way’s Right for You has a little more soul than The Penalty Box. Unfortunately, neither are right for the Flyers to use as a new Goal Song, which they need desperately.
