Eagles Hire Sirianni and the City Exclaims MEH

YES! The Eagles got their man, Nick Sirianni! I can’t believe it. As an IUP grad and a third-generation Italian-American, I couldn’t be happier. As an Eagles fan, I think I can sum up what most of us are feeling in three letters—MEH.

Nobody knows if Sirianni is going to be a good or bad head coach. If anyone tells you otherwise, they’re talking out their ass. I can tell you that Sirianni enters a most precarious situation. He’s got a QB controversy with an aging roster and a bloated payroll.

I’ve never seen the city so indifferent to a Philadelphia Eagles coaching hire. That’s not a reflection of anyone’s opinion of Sirianni. It is a direct result of no one, outside of Jeffrey Lurie,  having any confidence in Howie Roseman. We want him gone and the tone-deaf owner doesn’t care. As a result, what could be a moment of excitement and optimism is simply a moment of a collective Philadelphia EH.

Unfortunately for Sirianni, he looks more like a guy who is lucky to be a head coach in the NFL and willing to deal with Roseman and Lurie’s meddling as a result. There was no chance Lurie was hiring Josh McDaniels. A guy with six Super Bowl rings, who has worked with and butted heads with Tom Brady is not going to kowtow to Roseman and Lurie and he sure as hell isn’t going to coach Wentz with kid gloves. We know that’s a necessity. If you don’t believe the numerous reports and leaks about Wentz at this point, you probably think OJ is innocent. Roseman would probably be back in the closet in three months with McDaniels at the NovaCare complex.

So here we are. The bulk of fans indifferent during a time that should be exciting. Lurie has brought this on himself with his bizarre allegiance to Roseman. Will any of it matter if the Eagles go 10-6 with Wentz back to his 2017 form? Probably not. The odds of that happening with this roster and cap space feels pretty slim. Hopefully, the odds are wrong.

Until then, I actually am stoked with a paisan with IUP connections as the Eagles head coach. How long will that last? Probably not as long as Howie Roseman lasts. Leaks were already dropped that Roseman wanted McDaniels, but Lurie didn’t. Wonder who leaked that? Whose ass is covered if Sirianni struggles? HOWIE. Gotta love the guy’s preservation abilities.
