The Philly Snack Box You Have to Try
The greatest snack box in the world is in Philly. I feel confident making that statement. For starters, I don’t know any other “snack boxes”. However, I doubt they could compete with the Sunday Snack Box from Pizza Plus, the South Philly pizza shop by Daniel Gutter. Gutter is also the brains behind Philly’s leading pizza Instagram account, Pizza Gutt, and Circles+Squares Pizza in Kensington.
A friend of mine first told me about this legendary Sunday Snack Box. I couldn’t believe my ears. It sounded like a box of 74,000 glorious calories. When I told him that I ordered one for this past Sunday, the NFL’s Championship Sunday, his response was: “It’s the best worst thing I’ve ever done.”
It’s really hard to argue with that statement or think of something more accurate. The Sunday Snack box is a magnificent collection of fried and comfort-food goodness with no peers.
WHAT’S INSIDE?
The Sunday Snack Box comes with two smash burgers, a medium-sized pizza, chicken wings, onion rings, and pizza fries. Six homemade and delicious dips/sauces are also included: BBQ, Cooper Sharp cheese, Chipotle mayo, Buffalo sauce, ranch, honey mustard. As I said, find me a better collection of snack foods for a Sunday. And, it’s only $45. What a bargain!
This is what this box of food treasure actually looks like:
WINGS
Wings were phenomenal. Cooked through. Crispy. They tasted like they were done with a hickory or smoke finish. The Buffalo sauce was the perfect complement. They are definitely in my top 10 wing power rankings.
ONION RINGS
I’m a big onion ring fan. I like a solid, crispy breading exterior with a fresh onion inside that isn’t overly meaty and slimy. These were legit. The breading and onions were perfect. This might have been my favorite of the box.
SMASH BURGERS
If you don’t like smash burgers, just stop reading. You can’t do them wrong and they definitely do not here.
PIZZA FRIES
Oh yeah! Pizza fries are an underrated side. I’m so glad they didn’t go with fries or cheese fries. They had a real balanced sauce to cheese ratio. Pleasantly surprised at the use of curly fries, which retained their crispness during transport back to the house.
PIZZA
The place is called Pizza Plus and the guy behind it is Pizza Gut. No chance the pizza disappoints. It’s a circular, pan pizza. The dough is light and airy. Cheese and sauce are locked in. The crust totally pushes this over the top. It’s got fried cheese edges or something going on. It’s tasty as hell, though.
VERDICT
You need to try this, at least once. Everyone. Yeah, even you—unless your vegan or vegetarian. There are rumors that a vegan box is in the works.
Who doesn’t occasionally need an afternoon of indulgence that feels like a Caligula feast with a collection of foods considered outcasts by most traditional diets? We all do.
The Sunday Snack Box is fun. The Box made the entire day feel like a party. It’s decadent. And, it was fucking delicious. I highly recommend it. All the cool kids are doing it, just check Instagram.
You have to order through their website, but I don’t know when Snack Box ordering officially opens. I just got lucky and caught it on Instagram so make sure you follow the Pizza Plus account for your opportunity to order a box.
I’ll be checking with you hoping to score another box for the Super Bowl.
Mr. Daniel Gutter is a food genius for thinking of this brilliant combination of delicious delights.
P.S. Make sure you’re wearing joggers, yoga pants, or any other elastic waistband pants. Trust me.
