ESPN’s Crappy Ben Simmons Stat of the Day
Had ESPN on while working today. Glanced at the television and saw this stupid stat/graphic while they covered the breaking story that Bum Simmons says he will not report to the 76ers training camp and never play a game for Philadephia again.
What the hell does this stat convey? What is the purpose other than to kiss the ass of Ben Simmons and Rich Paul’s Klutch Sports.
Who gives a shit if he averaged seven rebounds and seven assists over his first four years. ESPN fails to mention that Oscar Robertson averaged 30.25 points over his four seasons or that Magic averaged 78% from the free-throw line over his first four years.
| Player Averages in Their First Four Season | |||
| BEN SIMMONS | OSCAR ROBERTSON | MAGIC JOHNSON | |
| POINTS | 15.9 | 30.25 | 18.7 |
| REBOUNDS | 8.1 | 10.7 | 8.6 |
| ASSISTS | 7.7 | 10.4 | 9 |
| FT % | 59.7 | 82.2 | 78 |
It’s an insult to Oscar Robertson to even mention his name in the same sentence as Ben Simmons. The Big O is in another stratosphere compared to The Big Dud. One can even go so far as to say it’s a joke to compare Ben’s first four years to Magic’s. Magic best Ben in every category even steals. But wait! I thought Ben was the defensive superstar. Magic averages 2.68 steals a game through his first four years while Ben averaged 1.7. That is basically one more steal per game.
A couple of additional stats that ESPN forgot to mention. Magic may not have been the greatest shooter, but he was never afraid to shoot or, more importantly, dunk. Magic took 98 3-pointers in his first four years while Ben took 34 and half of them were probably half-court shots at the end of quarters or halves.
GTFOH with these bullshit meaningless ESPN stats. Ben Simmons isn’t in the same class, world, or galaxy as Magic and Oscar or any other superstar. Total joke.
