Philly Weekend Picks: August 14-16

Yo…don’t be sitting around and just veggin’ out! Good stuff going on through the city. Here are Jawnville’s Philly Weekend Picks:

FRIDAY:

International House is screening 1929’s The Man with the Movie Camera. Sight & Sound readers named this the “Best Documentary of All Time.” Soviet filmmaker Dziga Vertov’s film revolutionized filmmaking to a style where the camera became an extension of the human eye. If you’re a film geek, check it out. Showtime is 7 p.m. and tickets are $7-9.

JENA FRIEDMAN brings her “American C*nt” stand-up comedy act to the Trocadero Friday night. Friedman is a comedian, actor, writer and director from NY. She has written for the Late Show with David Letterman and worked as a field producer for The Daily Show. Doors are 7 p.m. Show is at 8 p.m.

AWKWARD SEX….IN THE CITY hits L’etage Friday night. This touring show features a group of New York’s funniest comedians reliving their most awkward sex stories for your entertainment. Show is at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are $15.

CARIBBEAN NIGHT ON THE PARKWAY goes 5-10 p.m. at Eakins Oval. Food trucks including GiGi & Big R Soul, DJ Gully Ranks, Leah Smith, David Lyve and then a showing of the film Cool Runnings! Entrance is free. Pay as you go!

SATURDAY:

The 9th Annual JAZZ ON THE AVE FESTIVAL takes place Saturday at Broad & Cecil B. Moore Avenue from 12-8 p.m. Good music and it’s FREE all weekend! In addition to great music there will be free health screenings, children’s activities, vendors, and food. Main stage performers include Jeff Bradshaw & Friends w/Eric Roberson, Syleena Johnson and Elle Varner along with Suzanne Burgess, and more!

FESTIVAL OF INDIA takes place at Penn’s Landing’s Great Plaza. I love this festival. It may have something to do with me loving Indian food. In addition to that, the culture is great for families to experience. Thfood, clothing, music and dance is something to be seen and enjoyed. It’s free to get in and watch the entertainment. Food, drinks and merch are pay as you go. The Festival goes from noon to 8 p.m.

XPN’S The Hidden River Blues Festival celebrates the blues at Venice Island Outdoor Amphitheater in Manayunk. Local and national blues acts will take the stage in addition to a beer garden and vendors. Attendees get a wristband so you can come and go all day while exploring Main Street. Family friendly event with good blues music. Performers include: Otis Taylor Band, Sugar Blue Band, James Supra Blues Band, Deb Callahan Band, Steve Guyger and the Excellos, Tattar Tucker Moog Jackson with “Chicago” Carl Snyder. Festival goes 11 a.m. – 8 p.m.

SUNDAY

If you missed the Cool Runnings Caribbean Night on the Parkway you can still celebrate the Caribbean Culture at Penn’s Landing on Sunday for the Caribbean Festival as part of PECO’s Multi-Cultural celebrations. Penn’s Landing will be transformed into many islands showcasing food and authentic island sounds of reggae, roots international beat, hip-hop, cool jazz, etc. This runs from noon until 8 p.m.

Fan of punk music? Good documentaries? Underground Arts is screening The Damned: Don’t You Wish We Were Dead  Sunday night at 7 p.m. There will be a Q&A after with Wes Orshoski. The Damned are the first U.K. punk band on wax and the first to cross the Atlantic. The film includes appearances from Mick Jones, Lemmy, Chrissie Hynde and members of Pink Floyd, GNR, Sex Pistols, Blondie and more. The movie was shot over 3 years and around the world.
