Phillies Need to Pay Attention to the 76ers

Within a few weeks, the 76ers hired the most accomplished NBA GM on the market, unloaded a horrendous contract, and revamped their roster. Meanwhile, the Phillies have done nothing except reassign the woefully inept Matt Klentak and promote a guy in Ned Rice who was part of the most mediocre rebuild in recent history.
Phillies President Andy MacPhail continues to collect a paycheck for God-knows-what. He hasn’t been relevant in baseball in decades. Were any Phillies even born the last time MacPhail was involved in winning a World Series?
I swear that I’ve seen him sleeping in his box at Citizens Bank Park during games last season. I really have no idea what he does except say moronic things that insult the intelligence of Phillies fans again and again such as “if we don’t, we don’t.”
Under MacPhail’s watch, we endured the Gabe Kapler experiment. He then hired the incompetent Matt Klentak, who he worked with in the past, as General Manager. Klentak was Assistant GM in the Angels and they passed Klentak over when looking for a new GM. What did they know that MacPhail didn’t? MacPhail oversaw the trading of the best pitching prospect the organization has had in decades for Realmuto, who they botched extending before the season because of their miscalculations. Their star player, Bryce Harper, was vocally and publicly lobbying for a Realmuto extension, but this front office completely screwed it up.
And then, MacPhail has the audacity to utter the idiotic statement “Who’s going to want to uproot in the middle of a pandemic?” in regards to hiring a new GM.
Meanwhile, THIS WAS MERE DAYS AFTER THE 76ERS HIRED DARYL MOREY. Meanwhile, Phillies fans see other teams hiring general managers left and right, including Florida hiring the first female GM.
This is guy is a total dud deserving of zero additional time in the Phillies organization.
In fact, the Phillies need to follow the 76ers playbook. They need to act like a big market team, go over the luxury tax if need be, and hire a competent President/GM who has been relevant in the last TEN YEARS!
Stop nickel-and-diming Phillies fans and get a reputable GM. They did the right thing in bringing in Girardi. Now, it’s time to step up and hire a President/GM that fans can trust and has the skills to change the trajectory of this team.
If they don’t know how to do that, call the Sixers because that’s what they did.
